MATH ANXIETY
These culturally endorsed misconceptions about math go hand in hand with high levels of fear and apprehension about math-termed math anxiety.
In the United States, an estimated 25% of four-year college students and up to 80% of community college students suffer from a moderate to high degree of math anxiety (Beilock, 2014); worldwide, increased math anxiety is linked to decreased math achieve- ment (Lee, 2009).
In fact, it has even been argued that math anxiety can be classified as a genuine phobia given that it is a state anxiety reaction, shows elevated cog- nitive and physiological arousal, and is a stimulus-learned fear (Faust, 1992).
Math anxiety is troubling not only because it is associated with a host of negative emotions toward math (e.g.
